I have a confession to make: I chose this book for my July BOTM pick because of the cover.
Did I regret my decision? Nope.

“When twenty-nine-year-old Sunday Brennan wakes up in a Los Angeles hospital, bruised and battered after a drunk driving accident she caused, she swallows her pride and goes home to her family in New York. But it’s not easy. She deserted them all—and her high school sweetheart—five years before with little explanation, and they’ve got questions.
Sunday is determined to rebuild her life back on the east coast, even if it does mean tiptoeing around resentful brothers and an ex-fiancé. The longer she stays, however, the more she realizes they need her just as much as she needs them. When a dangerous man from her past brings her family’s pub business to the brink of financial ruin, the only way to protect them is to upend all their secrets—secrets that have damaged the family for generations and will threaten everything they know about their lives. In the aftermath, the Brennan family is forced to confront painful mistakes—and ultimately find a way forward, together.”
Read This If You Love…
- Complex family dramas
- Hot mess express characters
- Love triangles
- Multiple perspectives
- A crazy ending
I flew through We Are the Brennans because I couldn’t put it down! It tugged at my heartstrings.
There were many moments that had me nodding, cringing, or laughing because I come from an Irish-American family and this is such an accurate depiction of how we are. Stubborn, full of love, and would do literally anything for the people we love!
Tracey Lange immediately hooks the reader with Sunday’s car crash in the very first chapter. I found myself wondering, “what kind of demons is she dealing with to make this type of decision?” I just had to keep reading.
I loved the flow of the chapters because it was very unique. The story has multiple perspectives and each chapter picks up where the previous chapter left off, but from a different character’s perspective. While it sounds like it would be a bumpy ride, it was smooth-sailing!
The amount of generational trauma in this book is heartbreaking and something that I feel like so many people understand these days.
We Are the Brennans demonstrates how important it is to break the cycle and set yourself free by finally telling the truth.
I loved how real and human each character is. Everyone has their own set of strengths and weaknesses, and they make their own mistakes.
I felt like this story ended so fast! The resolution left me wanting more and I really hope that this is Tracey Lange setting us up for another book about my second favorite Irish-American family. *wink*
We Are the Brennans gets four out of five paws from this reader!
