Ahhhhh the first post! I’ve been around the blogging block for a while and honestly, trying to decide on the first post is a bit challenging. Do I introduce myself or do I just jump right into my content?
For this blog, I want to introduce myself and tell you a bit about what to expect.
So… allow me to introduce myself…
I’m Kayla, which I am sure that you gathered that from the name of this blog. How weird would it be to have a blog called What Kayla Is Reading but not be called Kayla…
I am currently 28 years old and I reside in South Florida with my pilot husband, a German Shepherd mix, and part Maine coon kitty.
Zeke, my GSD mix, is my partner-in-crime when it comes to my Bookstagram and blog. It is common to find photos of him posing with my books or even pretending like he’s reading them. I think he loves books, too, because I constantly catch him LICKING them! So just know if you’re going to stick around, you will be seeing lots of my boy!
My career for the past seven years has been in the fitness industry, but my first loves will always be reading and writing. I have a wild imagination thanks to being a lifelong reader and writing is how I often express myself.
I know this isn’t a unique thing, but I am completely obsessed with Harry Potter and will often reread the series when I am feeling stressed or going through something rough.
Books are my love language… I come from a family of book-sharers which I think is why I am always encouraging my other bookworm friends to borrow my books. Seriously, if you know me in real life and I let you borrow one of my books… that is not to be taken lightly and means that I like you!
How What Kayla is Reading was born…
I went through a VERY long reading rut… Like a couple of years long, mainly because I was busy! Then 2020 happened and I started reading during quarantine. Still, I wasn’t reading as much as I would’ve liked.
At the start of 2021, I made it my goal to read 20 books. Simple and small, but I figure it would be doable. It was around this time that I started discovering Bookstagram accounts with my personal Instagram. Perhaps IG was listening in on my conversations about how I wanted to read more books but I didn’t know what books to read?! Sneaky, sneaky.
As I was suffering through the Bridgerton series (yes, suffering, the show is way better, thank you Shonda Rhimes), I got this genius idea… why don’t I start my Bookstagram?
I had no clue if I could run two Instagram accounts at the same time, but I was willing to try.
The Bookstagram community blew me away and was so welcoming! I couldn’t believe how many book lovers were out there on social media and I truly feel like I’ve made friends within the community despite never meeting them.
Anyways, I’ve been blogging for a while, mostly about health and fitness. I was getting tired of writing about these subjects and often felt like my writing was becoming robotic and bland.
I ditched the fitness blog and started what you see here… my book blog! And I pray that it will be successful and a place people retreat to when they want to find their next great read.
I’m not doing this to start making money or to be Internet-famous.
I’m doing it because I love to read and I want to share that love with others!
Reading can be an amazing escape, a way to travel without leaving the comfort of wherever you are, and a way to learn.
I hope with this blog and my Bookstagram account, people will catch the reading bug and realize that even if they’ve been in a years-long reading rut, it is never too late to pick up a book and become a reader again!
Above all, I want my readers to realize that there is no right way to be a reader.
You guys will learn if you haven’t realized already through my social media, that I read a variety of books in a variety of ways.
Whether you read a book a day or take a month (or longer) to read one book; your library is electronic or hardcopy, or whether you read or listen to your stories… you ARE a reader! All that is required to be a reader is to simply love stories and to desire to live more lives than just your own.
I am beyond excited about this blog! Thank you for being here and make sure to subscribe and/or follow me elsewhere so you don’t miss any of my posts!
